5 Signs You Need to Upgrade Your Gutters

“Do I need gutters for my house?”

It’s a question that most homeowners ask, and for good reason. Being a homeowner is a big — not to mention expensive — responsibility, and there’s no reason to spend money if you don’t have to.

When it comes to gutters, though, they’re a solid investment, especially for those who live in a high rainfall zone (and if you live in Florida, that’s pretty much everywhere!). Of course they collect the rainwater that lands on your roof and direct it away from your home, but did you know that your home benefits in other major ways when you have a high-quality gutter system installed?

Gutters don’t just collect rainwater; they also extend your roof’s lifespan, protect your landscaping, preserve your paint job, and prevent damage in and around your home, so they’re a pretty important part of your home.

Signs You Need to Upgrade Your Gutters

Let’s look at five signs you need to upgrade your gutters.

#1 Splitting and Sagging

Gutters are supposed to be sturdy so they can hold rainwater and move it away from your home. If your gutters just don’t seem to be holding up the way they used to, and you notice splitting or sagging, then they probably aren’t doing their job as well as they could be. When you have a small split or crack in your gutters, you can use sealant to provide a temporary fix. Unfortunately, it won’t last forever, which means you will have to replace your gutters sooner rather than later to keep major damage from occurring to your home.

#2 Rusting and Rotting.

If water pools up for too long in your gutters, they’ll rust. Over time, rust will create holes in your gutters, and at that point, you might as well just tear them down. Similarly, if water isn’t being directed away from your home through your gutter system, then it’s likely that water will spill over the side of your gutters, defeating the whole purpose of having gutters in the first place. Not only will this cause peeling paint, but it will also cause rotting. When this happens, you’ll see outside problems with gutters turning into inside problems when your windows and doors can’t keep the weather out, and all your wood seems to be rotted away.

#3 Overflowing.

Most of the time when your gutters overflow, it’s because they’re clogged. Sometimes a simple repair can solve the problem of your gutters clogging up and overflowing, but that’s not always the case. Gutters are built to withstand a large volume of water, year after year. However, strong storms (including hurricanes!) can loosen your gutters from their securing holds, or even shift them so that rain doesn’t pull downward, but instead sits and eventually flows over the top. If you’re dealing with overflowing gutters on a regular basis, you need to get to the bottom of it so you can avoid costly expenses for water-related damage.

#4 Clogging up.

Gutters are known for collecting debris, including sticks, leaves, and silt — but that debris isn’t supposed to sit there! You should clean your gutters twice a year as recommended, or hire a professional to get the job done. If you’re doing that, then your gutters shouldn’t be clogging up. If you find that your gutters are clogging up on a regular basis, even with regular cleanings, then it generally stems from one of three causes: gutters that aren’t long enough to properly divert water; clogged gutters or downspout; or sagging gutters that don’t allow water to reach the downspout.

#5 Simply Outdated.

When you choose to install high-quality gutters from the start, they can last for years… and sometimes, even longer than you want! If you recognize that your gutters are outdated, then you may be ready to upgrade your gutters. Most older homes have sectional gutters installed on them since they were the only option available at the time. Nowadays, you can actually select what kind of gutters you want, from vinyl gutters to steel gutters, and even seamless copper gutters. For added protection, you can have gutter guards installed to keep debris out and ensure your gutters work well for years to come.
